VOLUME VII, CHAPTER 7
Earth, the One and Only Paradise
Three sections lift the eyes from the person to the ground the person stands on.
First, the gift. Earth gives us, free, the things no wealth can buy and no tool can make: air, water, soil, sunlight, the turning seasons, the smoke and warmth of the human world, and life that renews itself without end. Reckon them, and this is already paradise.
Then, the two faces. Heaven and hell are not two places. They are two faces of this one planet. Whether it is paradise or a pit turns on the human heart, on whether the five are alive.
Last, the guilt. The power to wound this paradise is not itself the guilt. The guilt lies in the human heart that wields it with the five gone out.
