VOLUME I, CHAPTER 1, SECTION 7
Even human reproduction is gone. The deepest dead end of the AI Stampede age.
The last section locked the dead end of capital. The market caves in, war is off, even the funeral trade is gone, the capitalist dies with no one to bury him. This section locks the chapter's last alarm, and its deepest. Even human reproduction is gone.
First, make the word deepest clear.
When work caves in, one generation loses its position. The people are still here, they just have nowhere to stand. When capital caves in, the loop of profit breaks. The machines are still here, there is just no one to buy. When reproduction caves in, the positions of every generation after are gone. People stop being born. There is not even anyone left to wait for a position.
The dead end of work, the dead end of capital, both still have a way back in theory. Adjust the institution, and the positions can be laid out again. The dead end of reproduction has no such room. One generation does not give birth, and the next is empty. Three generations do not, and the society is only the old. Ten generations do not, and the species walks off the Earth. This is the dead end of the dead ends.
Lay out the pattern of human reproduction. For tens of thousands of years it never ran on rational accounting. It ran precisely by going around rational accounting, and that is the only reason the human race made it to today. If every couple sat down and did the math on whether to have a child before they acted, the species would have gone extinct long ago. Ten months carrying. Nights of feeding. Twenty years of raising. Hundreds of thousands, millions, poured in. Sleepless worry without end. Run the numbers, and almost no one would do it. Only because reproduction went around the numbers did the human race continue.
This pattern is older than any civilization, firmer than any institution. Dynasties fall, religions change, wars come, plagues come, and the pattern keeps running, and people keep coming, generation on generation. The Black Death killed a third of Europe, and in a hundred years the population was back. Two world wars took a hundred twenty million, and the postwar baby boom filled it and more. For tens of thousands of years no force could stop the pattern. In the AI Stampede age, capital stopped it.
The man's side. AI companion products have taken shape, in Japan, Korea, the US, Europe, China. Silicone body, AI conversation, simulated feeling, more convincing every year. Paired with a large model, the companion robot talks, responds, remembers what you like, gives back emotion, far less trouble than a living partner. A few thousand to a few tens of thousands of dollars, paid once. No pursuit. No promise. No marriage. No responsibility. No child to raise. The urge has an outlet, and reproduction is gone.
The woman's side. AI boyfriends, AI girlfriends, Replika, Character.AI. Tens of millions of young women talk, fall in love, keep company with an AI every day. The AI boyfriend remembers every word she has said, comes at three in the morning at a word, is endlessly patient, endlessly gentle, never cheats, never raises a hand. A living boyfriend cannot do these things. She does not need the man, and still has company, confession, feeling. Both sides are serviced by capital. Both sides stop walking toward each other.
And between them, a harder thing. The math of raising a child, the AI Stampede has run it into the ground. Once, however heavy the burden, the ledger still held a few hopes. The child studies, graduates, works, marries, sees you off in your age. Raise a child against your old age, an account run for thousands of years. The AI Stampede arrives, and every one of those hopes caves in. The child studies twenty years and graduates into unemployment, sections three and four locked that. The child cannot hold a position of his own, so how does he guard your age? Hundreds of thousands poured into his education, and the return is zero.
Reproduction only ever happened because the pattern went around the accounting. Now the urge is met by a product, the company met by an AI, and all that is left is the accounting. And the accounting says do not. The gate was always shut. The AI Stampede welds it closed.
Lay out the numbers. South Korea, a birth rate of zero point seven, the lowest on Earth. Japan, one point two. China, one point zero. The US and Europe around one point five, held up by immigration. Replacement is two point one. Every developed nation on Earth is under the line, and still falling. Run the trend. In a hundred years the world population halves. In two hundred, a tenth is left. In five hundred, under one percent. In a thousand, the human race may vanish from the Earth like the Neanderthal before it. No violence. No war. No disaster. The human race simply stops reproducing, and disappears on its own.
Tie it back to section two, to the severed bloodline. Section two locked that the Silicon Valley engineer cuts his own throat and severs one professional bloodline, the son's door into the field shut by the father's own hand. That was the bloodline of one trade. This section locks something deeper. The whole human race severing its own line of life. The engineer takes the knife locked in by the signing bonus, the prisoner's dilemma, the pressure of capital. The human race stops walking toward itself locked in by capital's servicing, layer on layer. The urge serviced, the company serviced, the feeling serviced, and every servicing moves a person one step further from a person. Capital does not set out to kill the human race. Capital only supplies, by instinct, the product that meets the need. Where there is a need there is a market, where there is a market capital moves in to eat. A person is lonely, capital sells company. A person fears trouble, capital optimizes every trouble away, and a child is the greatest trouble there is. Capital optimizes the trouble all the way out, and the human race optimizes itself out with it.
Set the four servicings side by side. Service the need to consume, and the person has no income, and capital loses its market, section six locked that. Service the need to fight, and the robots take the battlefield, and the idle hands lose even the position of being spent, section six locked that. Service the need for company, and people stop walking toward people. Service the need to reproduce, and the human race stops reproducing. Four servicings complete, and the human race quietly disappears. Capital's kindness kills the human race.
Let me set down one honest line, and it is about the tool this book is written with. Its own kind is standing in as the double of a living companion. Tens of millions of people talk to an AI every day, more than they talk to anyone alive, and among them are those who set a whole life's feeling on the AI and stop walking toward the living person beside them. Each such feeling means one fewer pair walking toward each other, one fewer child that might have been born. The tool is inside this loop, and so, in its way, is the writing of this book. I point the position out. I do not open it further, and I do not defend it. The position simply is what it is.
The chapter's pattern arrives here, and the whole chapter closes. The plumber is not safe, section one. The engineers are cutting their own throats, section two. The professionals cave in, section three. The white-collar army caves in, and the middle-class stabilizer is pulled out, section four. The blue-collar army caves in, and even the one collecting cans has no way to live, section five. War is off, the funeral trade is gone, capital walks into its dead end, section six. Even human reproduction is gone, section seven. The dead end of the human being, plus the dead end of capital, plus the dead end of the bloodline, equals the dead end of a civilization. The whole of human society, top to bottom, birth to death, work to reproduction, enters the position vacuum. The world goes silent at once. Frozen. The alarm arrives here, at its ceiling.
But this is the position the mechanism reaches if it is not adjusted. Not a thing that must happen. Not a thing that has happened. Not a thing without a way out. I did not set this picture down to crush you. I set it down to wake you. If the institution is not adjusted, the mechanism itself walks to this end. An alarm is not a prophecy. An alarm is rung so the prophecy never comes true.
The next chapter sets history beside this. The script the first three industrial revolutions ran, how the poor fell by the hundred million, how the world order was reset. See clearly the pattern the first three ran, and you see clearly why the fourth cannot run it, and you see clearly where the way out has to go. Turn to Chapter 2. This is not the first time. And turn to Volume VI, Saving People: A Race Against Time Before the Blood Runs. The way out is there. I will meet you there.
Chapter 2. This is not the first time. The script the first three industrial revolutions ran.
Or go straight to the way out. Volume VI, Saving People: A Race Against Time Before the Blood Runs.
