VOLUME V, CHAPTER 14
From the Old Order to Artificial Intelligence, the Law's Last Chase
This is the last chapter of the volume, and it does two things. It seals off the present international order, sees that however fine the rules the core is still a balance of force frozen in place, and out of that draws a wholly new output that is redrawing the map, artificial intelligence. Then, following that new output, it sets out the whole array of the law's positions in the age of artificial intelligence, one layer at a time, and crosses over to the next volume. The thirteen chapters before this dug all the way down to output, the root under everything. This one watches what happens when output takes on a wholly new shape, and the old law and the old order, step by step, cannot keep up.
The first section seals off the present international order. From Bretton Woods to the rules of trade, the core is the law of one household written by the strong, and the world's output positions are shifting, so the rules will follow in time, and out of this it draws artificial intelligence, a new output. This is the forty-first layer.
The second section sets two rules. The law always lags, that is its nature, and the law it writes once it has caught up mostly welds the vested interest in place. The law over artificial intelligence will not escape this. This is the forty-second layer.
The third section returns to the core. Artificial intelligence is a tool, and the one who holds the license is always the person, yet most of the people training it hold no license, and when something goes wrong the responsible party cannot be reached, and the people it replaces stand on positions ever narrower, and at the end it sets out a paradox, laid down and not resolved. This is the forty-third layer.
These three sections build from the forty-first layer to the forty-third, set out the full array of the law's positions in the age of artificial intelligence, and close the whole volume. This chapter holds the discipline the volume has kept from the first page to the last. It lays out only the positions, gives no way out, brings every dislocation and every bind to the eyes, and leaves every answer to the next volume, Saving People. The more clearly the positions are set, the more firmly that way out will stand.
