VOLUME VII, CHAPTER 1
The Tool and the Real Human, Where This Volume Begins
Three sections set the starting ground of the whole volume. Read together, they hand you a single beginning, and from that beginning everything else in Hope unfolds.
First, see the tool clearly. Artificial intelligence, however strong it grows, is a tool. It cannot replace a real human. It moves faster, wider, more tirelessly than any of us, and it has come to resemble a person so closely that the likeness is hard to tell from the real thing. Yet strong as it is, like as it is, it remains a tool, because when it acts there is no self inside it, no life of its own, no conscience, no reason of its own for doing the thing.
Then, see the real human clearly. What a tool can never hold is a share that lives inside a person: the five things. Keep the rules. Guard what is handed down. Love all living things. Mercy for the suffering. A good heart. Keep, guard, love, mercy, heart. A body in which all five are alive and bright is a whole real human. When the five go dark in a body, that body may still be walking about, but the real human is gone.
Last, see the trap clearly. This world is handing the seats that need the five things over to a tool that has none of them. The judge's seat, the doctor's seat, the teacher's seat, the lawmaker's seat, seats where a case turns on whether a living heart is present, are being given, inch by inch, to an engine that cannot see the living person beneath it. That is the trap this volume sets out to open.
