VOLUME VI, CHAPTER 5, SECTION 6
Robbing That Cuts Life Off, Hounding That Takes Life, the Last Two Links of the Chain That Harms the People Lawfully
The last section laid open the first two links of that chain that harms the people lawfully, tormenting that grinds life, crushing that breaks life. This section goes on to the two links behind, the heavier ones, robbing that cuts life off, and hounding that takes life. These two links are where this chain truly costs lives. Still, no real case names a place or a person, because this thing is everywhere, and to point at any one is to make it look as though only that one were bad.
The third link, one weight heavier than crushing, robbing that cuts life off. The second link, crushing, breaks the road you were walking, your livelihood, your standing. The third link goes further, it reaches out and takes away the very thing you live on, your home, your property, the last stake that keeps your family alive, and cuts off your road to live.
Look back at the fourth chapter, at that land tax, that home seized because it could not be paid. Set it now under the law's ruler and look. A person, having lost his income, perhaps culled off his post by this great fire of the AI turning, cannot pay that land tax. And that one holding the law, reading only the dead letter, by the procedure, auctions off, takes away, the home he guarded his whole life. On the surface, it is all lawful, the notice sent, the announcement posted, the auction run through the process, every step by the book. But at the end of that by-the-book procedure is a living family's last home, gone, and the family, from that day, with no roof, no ground under their feet, cut off from the road to live.
This is robbing that cuts life off. It does not, like crushing, only break the road you were walking, it reaches out and takes away the last thing that keeps you alive. A home is a person's last shelter, the last stake a family leans on to live. Take it away, and it is not breaking one road, it is cutting off every road, pushing the whole family out into the wind and rain with nowhere to turn. And it robs lawfully, by the book, by the procedure, and the one who robbed you stands in the full light without a flaw, and you, robbed of your last home, cannot even find the door to reason it out. The fourth chapter said it, even the profit-chasing bank was made to stay its hand and save a person who had lost his income, and this hand holding the law is fiercer than the bank, and at your most cornered moment is the first to reach out and take your last home. This is the third link, robbing that cuts life off.
The fourth link, the heaviest, the one that truly takes a life, hounding that takes life. The three links before, grinding, crushing, robbing, wear at a person, break a person's road, cut off a person's living, and though heavy, the person is still there. The fourth link presses on past that, hounds a person until, at the very end, the life itself is gone.
Let me draw out for you how it hounds. A person, ground by the first link, crushed by the second, robbed by the third, is by now pressed into a corner with no road out. His livelihood cut, his home gone, his good name stained, and he goes everywhere to reason it out, to seek a way through, and everywhere he meets that same dead letter, that same by-the-book wall. He sues, and the ruling, by the dead letter, goes against him. He appeals, and layer by layer, the dead letter is stamped down again. Everywhere he turns for a road, that chain, layer upon layer, closes it off, all lawful, all by the book, all without a flaw he can seize. He is a living person, hounded step by step by this whole chain into a dead corner, every road to live sealed, every door to reason it out shut.
A person hounded to this step, pressed into a corner with no road out, no door to reason it out, his whole life's stake taken, his good name stained, and everywhere he turns met by that by-the-book wall, is pushed, at the last, past the edge of what a person can bear. And there, at that edge, some are lost. The life that this whole chain, link by link, ground and crushed and robbed and hounded, is, at the very end, lost. And the ones who hounded him there, not one of them, on the surface, broke a rule. Each did his stretch by the dead letter, by the book, the procedure complete. They joined, link by link, into a chain that hounded a living person off the edge of life, and each stands in the full light, without a flaw, feeling he only went by the rule, that this has nothing to do with him. A living person is gone, hounded to death lawfully, by the book, and no one bears the fault. This is the fourth link, hounding that takes life, the heaviest, and the most chilling.
Here let me stop the telling a moment and say a plain word to you. Reading these four links, down to this hounding-to-death, your heart is heavy, and it should be. This is a heavy, painful thing to speak of. If you, or someone near you, have been ground, crushed, hounded by such a chain until you can see no road ahead, do not let that last step be the answer. That chain is the thing at fault, not you, and a road blocked by a chain can be a road that someone else helps you find again. Reach out to a person you trust, or to someone whose work it is to help, and let them stand with you while the road is looked for. The whole of this book is written so that not one more person is hounded to that edge. Your life is exactly the thing it means to save.
Now let me draw these four links together, and let you see the whole shape of this chain. Tormenting that grinds life, the lightest, grinds your time, your money, your strength. Crushing that breaks life, one heavier, breaks the road you were walking, your livelihood, your standing. Robbing that cuts life off, one heavier again, takes away your last home, your last stake, cuts off your road to live. Hounding that takes life, the heaviest, hounds you, at the last, out of life itself. Four links, from light to heavy, grinding, breaking, cutting off, taking, a person ground down, step by step, from a small torment at a window, to the losing of his very life. This is that chain that harms the people lawfully, laid open, whole, before you.
And look through all four links, and the root is the same one thing, the sections before nailed it. In the hand of the one who grinds, crushes, robs, hounds, is held only the dead letter, and in his heart is lost the living intent of the law, protecting people. Every one of these four harms is done wearing the full skin of the law, lawful, by the book, without a flaw. This is the most fearful thing about this chain, it is not a robber with a knife, whom you can see, can name, can go after. It is a chain that harms you in the full light of day, by the book, and leaves you nowhere to reason it out. The next section takes this chain, laid open now, and tells you plainly why, its every stroke driving the people to their deaths, this chain must be cut, and cut from the source.
