The white-collar army caves in across the board. The middle-class position vacuum.
The last three sections locked it. The plumber is not safe, the pill-robot is already operating inside the gut. The Silicon Valley engineers are cutting their own throats, and cutting down all humankind. The lawyers and doctors and therapists and accountants are all going down, ten years of study and the AI stands in the position in seconds.
Those professionals were the elite top layer of the white collar. Medical degree, law degree, therapist license, CPA. Highest wall, longest training, highest pay. This section drops one rung. The white-collar army. No license, but a diploma. No ten years, but four years of college. No million-dollar pay, but a hundred to a few hundred thousand a year, the office crowd of every city.
They are called office workers in America, salarymen in Japan, white-collar staff in Europe. They are the spine of a modern society. Up before dawn onto the train, ten hours at the desk, home to the kids at night, overtime on the weekend. They hold up the price of housing, the consumer market, the tax base, the middle class itself. The middle class is the stabilizer of a modern society. The AI Stampede is pulling the stabilizer out.
Start with what white-collar work actually is. Processing information. Text, data, images, sound, video, moved from one form into another. Read the email, write the email, read the report, write the report, read the chart, build the chart, sit the meeting, take the minutes, gather the data, clean the data, answer the client, answer the question. Every task, information in one form to information in another.
And what is an AI. A machine for processing information. Only that. It processes information thousands of times faster than a human, dozens of times more accurately, hundreds of times cheaper, twenty-four hours a day, no sleep, no fatigue, no temper, no raise.
The nature of white-collar work is the exact thing the AI does best. Run that pattern to its end and there is one result. The white collar is replaced across the board. Not part of it. All of it. Not in ten years. Within five. Not a gentle handoff. A cliff.
I am going to read you the list now. Find your own line on it.
Support reps. Two point nine million in the US, fifteen million worldwide. The largest white-collar base job there is. From 2023 nearly every large company put AI on the front line. Klarna announced in 2024 that AI support replaced seven hundred human agents and saved forty million dollars. Bank of America's Erica has handled over two billion customer conversations, the work of tens of thousands of humans. Amazon, Apple, Meta, Google slashed front-line support. The outsourcing centers of Bangalore, Manila, Nairobi, Monterrey, the millions who took the West's support work for decades, the seats are vanishing. Support as a job loses eighty percent within five years.
Translators. Three to five hundred thousand worldwide. One of the most completely replaced. GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, DeepL are near professional-human quality. In law, medicine, finance, AI translation is past the junior and near the senior. Even simultaneous interpretation, once thought the hardest, is going, with real-time AI in Google Translate, Otter, Zoom. Translation loses seventy percent within ten years.
Clerks, admin assistants, secretaries. Fifteen million in the US. The largest white-collar base job by count. Copilot, Google Workspace AI, Notion AI. The AI drafts the minutes, drafts the reply, coordinates the calendar, files the documents, builds the report. One AI assistant replaces three to five clerks. Sixty percent gone within five years.
Reporters. Thirty-five thousand in the US, two million worldwide. The AP has run AI for earnings stories since 2014, four thousand a quarter, all machine-written, and from 2023 pushed it into sports, local, corporate news. BuzzFeed cut fifteen percent in 2023 citing AI content. Local news, city council, community events, already replaced at scale. News was already gutted by the internet, half the print papers dead in twenty years, two-thirds of local papers gone. The AI Stampede is the last blow. Another fifty percent of news jobs cut within ten years.
Illustrators and graphic designers. Millions worldwide. Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, Adobe Firefly. When this wave landed, commercial illustration fell through the floor on the spot. China's game industry cut over fifty percent of its illustrators in 2023. Japanese studios cut illustrator hiring seventy percent in 2024. US publishing orders fell eighty percent. The Japanese cartoonists' association reported in 2024 that forty-seven percent of manga artists fear replacement. Sixty to eighty percent gone within five years.
Programmers. Twenty-seven million worldwide. Programmers are white collar too, mind workers, the office crowd in t-shirts. Copilot landed and the junior market shrank forty percent. Cursor, Claude Code, Devin, Replit go further, building whole apps straight from a request. One programmer who wields the AI replaces five to ten who do not. The field does not vanish, it shrinks and splits. Some become AI engineers, the rest are out, and the split is brutal. The older ones, past thirty-five, have the hardest time and the highest odds of the cut. The industry as a whole shrinks thirty to fifty percent in five years. The Silicon Valley engineers of the last section were the top zero point zero one percent, the million-dollar few. This is the middle eighty percent, the ordinary back-end, front-end, test, ops, on a hundred to a few hundred thousand, with no bonus to soften it, the ones the top engineers cut down with their own hands.
Designers. UI, UX, product, interior, millions worldwide. Figma AI, Canva AI, Firefly, Microsoft Designer. A product manager with AI generates the UI, no separate designer. A marketer with AI generates the poster, no separate graphic designer. Interior design was thought hard to replace, needing taste, site visits, client talk. In fact the AI tools generate dozens of full schemes at a click and the client picks. Designer hours compressed eighty percent, the field down over fifty percent in five years.
Financial analysts, advisers, traders. Wall Street, Lujiazui, the City of London. Replaced for a decade already. High-frequency trading is ninety-nine percent AI. JPMorgan's COIN did three hundred sixty thousand hours of lawyer-work in seconds back in 2017. Goldman's New York equity desk had six hundred traders in 2000 and two in 2017. Robo-advisers manage over a trillion dollars. Finance cut thirty percent of white-collar seats in ten years, and another fifty percent to come.
Insurance assessors, actuaries, claims. AI clears a claim in seconds. Insurers cut assessors at scale. The field down twenty-five percent in five years, another forty to come.
HR and recruiters. AI screens the resume, runs the interview, scores the hire. LinkedIn's AI recruiter replaces millions of human headhunters. One system ranks tens of thousands of resumes at once. HR down fifteen percent in five years, another forty to come.
Marketing, advertising, brand. AI writes the copy, buys the placement, runs the analysis, makes the creative. Meta, Google, TikTok ad buying is over eighty percent automated. Agencies cut at scale. Down twenty percent in five years, another forty to come.
Photographers, video editors, music producers, voice actors. AI generates the image. Sora, Runway, Pika generate the video, and editor hours collapse. Suno, Udio generate the music. ElevenLabs, Murf, HeyGen generate the voice. The creative field cut thirty percent in three years, another fifty to come.
Writers, novelists, copywriters. AI writing climbs fast. China's web-fiction platforms run heavy AI assistance from 2024. Text workers cut twenty-five percent in three years, another fifty to come.
Academics, professors, postdocs. AI writes the paper, the literature review, the analysis. Junior research work replaced at scale. Academic white-collar seats down thirty percent in ten years.
Paralegals. One of the highest replacement rates in law, junior hiring down over fifty percent. Dental assistants, nursing aides, techs, squeezed by AI plus automation. Teachers and tutors. Khanmigo, Duolingo AI, ChatGPT tutoring are moving into education at scale, and the tutoring business is hit hardest. The in-person public school teacher holds on for now, but grading, prep, and personalized help go, and teacher numbers shrink thirty percent within ten years.
Finished the list. If you are still in the white-collar world, turn back and find your own line. There is almost no white-collar job that is not on it.
Now lock it in. The white-collar army caving in across the board is the middle class caving in across the board. What is the middle class? The stable structure a modern society built over a hundred years. A college degree, a professional skill, an office job in a city, income enough for a home, a car, the kids' school, health insurance, a pension, a place in society. The middle class holds up the housing market, the consumer market, the tax base. It is the largest stabilizer a modern society has. The AI Stampede pulls out its entire occupational base.
The middle-class kid is still in school, still in debt, studying a college major, law, medicine, finance, marketing, design, literature, journalism, computing, and graduates to find the whole field caved in. This is the first generation in human history of middle-class children who graduate straight into unemployment.
The middle-class parent is still working, but the work is vanishing, aged forty to fifty-five, old parents above and children below, mortgage and car and school, savings that do not cover two years. Cut, and too old to retrain, and no next job.
The middle-class pension system is breaking. Pensions are funded by the payroll of working white-collar people. Mass white-collar unemployment shrinks the base, and the pool runs dry. The already-retired watch their pension thinned by inflation. The three-generation structure of the middle class, the kids, the working adults, the retired elders, caves in at once.
And go deeper. The tragedy of the white collar is a big investment with a thin cushion. The family spent a dozen years and a fortune on the college degree. The return was supposed to be a good salary, slowly paying down the mortgage, slowly saving. But the account is nearly empty. In America seventy percent of families have under a thousand dollars saved. Lose the job, and three months in, the basics and the tuition just about hold. Six months in, the retirement account and the maxed cards. A year in, the mortgage defaults and the bank takes the house. Two years in, the marriage breaks, the family collapses, the kid drops out. A cliff, not a gentle transition. A whole family's stable structure dissolving overnight.
And the fallen white-collar worker cannot retrain, because into what? Every white-collar field is caving in. Learn a new skill? The AI learns it faster than you. Go freelance? The AI already squeezed that market. Start a company? Capital only funds AI companies. Go blue-collar? The next section shows blue-collar caving in too, and the step down is brutal on the mind. Every road out is blocked.
Tie it back to section two. The white-collar army is the body of the humankind the top engineers cut down. This section says who that humankind is by name. The junior lawyer cut from the firm. The law graduate who cannot find work. The family doctor replaced by AI diagnosis. The seven hundred agents Klarna cut. The editors BuzzFeed cut. The finance reporters the AP stopped hiring. The Chinese game illustrator replaced by Midjourney. The junior programmer replaced by Copilot. The UI designer replaced by Figma AI. The financial adviser replaced by the robo-adviser. The voice actor replaced by ElevenLabs. The copywriter replaced by ChatGPT.
Hundreds of millions of white-collar people, and every one a specific person cut down by the AI Stampede. Every one with a name, a family, a dozen years of training sunk in, a mortgage and kids and parents. Not an abstract humankind. Specific people. Capital hands out the knife. The engineer takes it. The knife goes into hundreds of millions of white-collar workers.
Run that pattern to its end and you get the middle class caving in across the board, the stabilizer pulled out, the spine of a modern society snapped.
And this is not even the floor. The next section drops one more rung, the blue-collar army caving in across the board. Drivers, cooks, builders, plumbers, guards, cleaners, caregivers, farmers, miners, couriers. The positions the earlier revolutions left for the hands, this time all taken by robots. Blue-collar caves in harder than white. The white collar had a thin sliver of room and a thin cushion. The blue collar has neither. To be replaced is to go straight to the street. The last alarm.
